Nauru Commends Vietnam and Expands Opportunities for Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors

Marking the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Nauru (June 21, 2006 – June 21, 2026), both countries have reiterated their shared commitment to expanding cooperation in various fields, ranging from trade and fisheries to climate change adaptation and sustainable development.

Nauru Views Vietnam as a Strategic Partner in Trade and Development

On May 27, at Vietnam House in Canberra, Australia, Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam met with Nauru’s High Commissioner to Australia, Ms. Camilla Solomon, along with representatives from several Pacific island nations.

During the meeting, Ms. Camilla Solomon noted that although diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Nauru have spanned only two decades, the two countries have established a positive foundation for cooperation based on mutual trust, respect, and a shared commitment to common interests.

According to the Nauruan side, Vietnam is regarded as one of the region’s most remarkable development success stories. Nauru highly values Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements and expressed its desire to expand cooperation in a range of promising sectors.

In particular, Nauru expressed interest in increasing imports of essential goods from Vietnam to ensure a stable supply for its population. Given its heavy reliance on imported products, diversifying trade partners has become a key priority for the island nation.

Beyond trade, Nauru also views Vietnam as a highly promising partner in the fisheries sector, particularly in tuna fishing, aquaculture, and the sustainable development of the blue economy.

The Pacific island nation further encouraged Vietnamese businesses to explore investment and partnership opportunities in infrastructure development projects. Such cooperation is expected to contribute to economic growth while improving the quality of life for local communities.

As one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels, Nauru believes that it shares many common environmental challenges with Vietnam. This common ground provides a strong foundation for the two countries to enhance cooperation at international forums and advance initiatives focused on environmental protection and sustainable development.

After 20 years of diplomatic relations, Vietnam and Nauru are presented with growing opportunities to deepen practical cooperation across various sectors. Strengthened collaboration is expected to foster closer economic and trade ties, while also promoting greater people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

Vietnam Ready to Expand Comprehensive Cooperation with Nauru

On Vietnam’s side, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam reaffirmed the country’s commitment to fostering friendship and cooperation with Nauru over the past two decades. He noted that despite the considerable geographical distance between the two nations, as well as differences in population size and territory, Vietnam and Nauru have maintained a strong level of mutual understanding on many important international issues.

The two countries have consistently coordinated and supported each other in multilateral forums, particularly in areas such as marine environmental protection, climate change response, and the promotion of compliance with international law.

Ambassador Pham Hung Tam noted that there remains significant untapped potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Nauru, particularly in the areas of trade, agriculture, and the blue economy. Vietnam stands ready to share its expertise in agricultural development, aquaculture, and sustainable fisheries management to support Nauru’s economic growth and development objectives.

On this occasion, the Ambassador also called on Nauru and other Pacific island nations to continue supporting Vietnam’s candidate for Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026 – 2035 term. The election is scheduled to take place at the United Nations in June.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam and High Commissioner Camilla Solomon expressed confidence that the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations would serve as a catalyst for deeper bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing practical initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to their peoples, while contributing to peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region and beyond.

To mark this important milestone, the leaders of Vietnam and Nauru are also expected to exchange congratulatory messages, reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the two countries in the years ahead.
