Residence by investment

A second home in Europe.

Long-term or permanent residence in the European Union, offering a stable base for your family, access to schools and healthcare, and freedom to plan for the future.

An overview

Is residence by investment right for you?

Residence programmes allow non-EU nationals to obtain a residence permit in return for a qualifying investment, provided they meet the conditions set by law.

They suit families who want a secure foothold in Europe, entrepreneurs who need a base for their business, and investors planning for retirement or their children’s education. Each programme differs in its investment routes, the family members it covers, how much time you must spend in the country and how the permit is renewed.

Before you decide

Points worth considering.

i.

Residence is not tax residence

Holding a permit does not, by itself, make you tax resident. Tax residence is a separate test in each country, and specialist advice is essential.

ii.

Time in the country

Programmes differ in how long you must spend in the country to keep or renew your permit.

iii.

Holding the investment

Most programmes require the investment to be maintained for a minimum period, or for as long as you hold the permit.

iv.

Citizenship is separate

Residence may count towards naturalisation in some countries, but citizenship is never automatic and has its own conditions.
